We were fortunate enough to be able to celebrate New Years Day twice. Our celebration began on the beach of Koh Lanta. We could see every resort on the beach preparing for the clock to strike midnight. There were fireworks going off all night, Chinese flying lanterns (for lack of a better term) being lit and launched over the ocean, music coming from all of the restaurants and bars (including two places right next to each other playing very different music, both extremely loud which made for an interesting combination of sounds), and people scattered all over the beach. We know compared to other Thai beaches, ours was pretty low key which was exactly how we wanted it. The big fireworks show at midnight and the close to 100 lanterns that were spread out over the sky were highlights for us. We could also see a fireworks show from another island across the way that was pretty cool too.
Our second New Years celebration took place nearly 15 hours later over Skype. We hung out with our “family” who were continuing the annual New Years traditions and adding a few new elements as well. We were bummed we weren’t able to take part in the “Midnight Mile”… but we’ll run two miles next year (maybe).
How great it was to bring in the new year, times two!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Love you
You can run my mile next year =)
So sad I missed the New Year celebration with the fam. Molly and I woke up too late in the day to make the call. But we thought of all of you – in OR and Asia. Can’t wait till you hit Africa. You can get a practice mile in at 6000 ft here in Nairobi – that counts for two miles!
